About Katooeys and Ladyboy
Shows
Entertainment in Thailand is like no other in the world,
Cabaret in Thailand is made up mainly of Kathoey's or
Ladyboys. The history of kathoeys are a long and colorful
one going back thousands of years has been an essential part
of the community for entertaining the local village on
special occasions.
Buddhism embraces trans-gendered individuals in the belief
that a person's becoming a kathoey is predetermined from
birth. Many communities accept a third sex, from Thai and
Samoan to Native American and Filipino. Only in the West has
repression occurred. An enlightened attitude that was
boosted by several Thai movies in the past two decades
dedicated to katoey themes. 'Beautiful Boxer', for example,
tells the true story of a Thai kickboxing champion who
became a woman, adored by fans and feared by rivals. And
"Satree Lek" which translate to "Steel
Ladies", the kathoey volley ball team that where known
for their hard as iron competitive rivalry. You can even see
ladyboy volley ball teams on the beach at Chaweng, but a
word of warning they are just as competitive and to the
surprise of many opposition westerner's teams that loose
most of the time. Turning to leave shaking their head in
disbelievement.
Your visit to Samui is not complete without been dazzled by
the professional and sparkling performances at "Stars
in Paradise". These fascinating and highly artistic
performers captivate audiences with their charm, unique
creativity and flawless female impersonations. The show
promises an evening of polished and most enjoyable
entertainment for the whole family.
The staff are all male though you might have difficulty
believing it. Some of the performers live as men and are
female impersonators, some are katooey with breast implants
and one has had full gender reassignment. We will leave it
up to you to guess who!
Most of the costumes are hand made by the performers and
they may stay up all night sewing seams or sequins for the
new show number. Most time it takes more time to make the
costumes then it is to rehearse the new production.
Mix of modern day dance influenced by likes Madonna Kylie
Myongie, Tina Turner with the traditional Thai cultural
dance every child is taught from a early age. All of the
performers have chosen to dance and entertainment for as
long as they can remember and have trained for many years to
give you the best performance each and every night. The show
is different every night and you can be assured that as many
others do, when you come to see the show more than just one
night you will be delighted with the large repertoire. |
