Koh Samui, 280 Km2, is the largest island of the Gulf of Siam. It is part of an archipelago of 80 smaller islands of which 6 only are inhabited. It is almost literally an island of coconuts and forested hills, on chalk mountains, culminating at 636 meters. Its beautiful beaches, its jungle, its hills and waterfall create a very changing landscape, rarely found in other islands. Samui is growing in popularity as a holiday destination for gays and lesbians who come from all over the world to dive, golf, shop, dine, party, splash in waterfalls, trek, ride elephants, drive from beach to beach or melt their cares away in exotic spas. The story of Samui started to change in the beginning of the 80's, when it was discovered by backpacker-travelers. These brought the creation of small simple bungalow resorts with palm leaves roofs, but the secret could not be kept for long and now the island is fast becoming a  resort  of  international stature.  Yet,  in spite  of  the  development  of tourism, its inhabitants are well determined to preserve

its natural charm and exceptional attraction. You will not find many buildings higher than a coconut palm. The beach is always close to your door. Samui's best beaches line the northern and eastern coasts, the most popular being Chaweng and Lamai where, generally, the most attractive and expensive accommodation is found.

Besides beaches, other island attractions include the Hin Lat and Na Muang waterfalls, the phallic rock formations "Hin Ta and Hin Yai" at the southern end of Lamai Bay, the massive seated "Big Buddha" image of Bophut. There are three main temples that you will want to visit; Wat Samret, Laem Sor Chedi and Wat Khun Aram. Like most temples in Thailand you are asked to dress respectfully whenever you visit and avoid flip flops and bathing attire. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the temples here is that they are home to mummified monks that are more than 20 years old. Monks are revered in Thailand and this is how the islanders have chosen to honor their memory. The monks are still clothed and are amazingly well preserved.

Samui has a tropical climate, with an average temperature between 25°C and 34°C. The most important raining period is in November. Population: 40 000 inhabitants. As you would expect form a tropical island many visitors come to Samui to explore the natural beauty of the area both on land, on sea and underwater.  The region of famous for its calm clear waters, millions of coconut trees and undisturbed islands and beaches. The center of the gay nightlife is Chaweng Beach Road, which runs parallel to the beach - about 2.5 km long from the North to the South, usually refer to North, South or Central Chaweng. You can find gay businesses from Chaweng North opposite Nora Hotel to Chaweng South opposite Poppins Ressort. Close to Starbucks is also an area you will find straight late night bars and dance venues some of which are the favorite by gay Thai men and gay international visitors. A larger concentration of gay businesses are in close proximity to each other in South Chaweng opposite the Centara Grand Beach Resort. Three of Samui's best gay venues are now located on the same Soi (Thai name for small street).  This is a small walking only street 100 m north of the entrance to Centara Grand Beach Resort.
